The ADVOCATE Project held an International Conference in London under the name In Situ Remediation ‘14. This conference was organised and presented by CL:AIRE on behalf of the ADVOCATE Project and took place at the impressive Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre on 2nd – 4th September 2014. Two frenetic days of high quality presentations and a third day containing a workshop called In Situ Remediation of Contaminated Sites, organised by Geosyntec Consultants, has made this event a huge success. 140 delegates from around the world (55% from UK, 45% from Europe, North and South America, New Zealand and more) got to hear the latest scientific and technological advances in the management, assessment and sustainable in situ remediation of contaminated land and groundwater.
Six keynote speakers - Gudrun Massmann, Michael Schubert, Mette Martina Broholm, Willy Verstraete, Ofer Dahan, Ilse Van Keer – leading scientists in the conference themes; 24 plenary presenters; over 30 posters and 140 delegates around the world have made this event possible and successful.
In the framework of the ADVOCATE Project’s objectives, this conference was designed in part with the aim to motivate the researchers to develop new scientific understanding in the use of sustainable in situ remediation for contaminated land and groundwater. Then, with the aim to encourage presenters to continue promoting knowledge and advances in the management and restoration of contaminated land and groundwater two prizes were awarded, the Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster. The respective winners were - Natalia Fernández de Vera, University of Liege and Laura Newsome, University of Manchester.
Finally, the conference has given the opportunity to the fellows to establish new connections with both the industry and other leading universities with the aim to drive their careers. As well, they have had the occasion to participate actively as part of their outreach skills training in the conference being co-chair of a session according to their expertise with the support of an established industry person and presenting their results through oral presentations and posters.
